Description
This is one of Madrid's main tourist attractions. Originally a fortress then a citadel then disaster struck and a fire reduced the building to ashes, soon after the fire King Philip V ordered a new palace to be built in the same place, but no wood or flammable materials were to be used in it construction so fire could never take hold again.

The building was finished in 1755; King Charles III was the first king of Spain to take up residence in the newly built magnificent royal palace and is now the official residence of the King of Spain, although the King himself does not actually live in the palace, It is only used for ceremonial purposes on state occasions. The palace is open to the public and houses a magnificent museum, and extensive landscaped gardens plan to spend the day
